How birds breathe

I read with interest that the House Sparrow breathes 50 times a minute when resting and this increases to over 200 when flying, which is five times more than humans. On further investigation, it turns out that birds have a unique and highly efficient way of breathing that is very different from that of humans and other mammals. Their respiratory system is specially adapted to support the high energy demands of flight, allowing them to take in more oxygen and use it more effectively.


Air enters a bird’s body through small openings in the beak called nostrils, or nares. From there, the air travels into a system made up of the lungs and a series of air sacs located throughout the bird’s body. Most birds have nine air sacs that extend into the chest,

abdomen, and even into some of the bones. These air sacs do not exchange oxygen directly with the blood, but they play a vital role in moving air efficiently through the lungs.


A bird’s lungs work very differently from human lungs. Instead of expanding and contracting, bird lungs remain rigid. Inside the lungs are tiny tubes known as parabronchi, where oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is released. What makes this system especially effective is that air flows through the lungs in only one direction, rather than moving in and out as it does in mammals.


Breathing in birds happens over two full cycles of inhalation and exhalation. When a bird inhales for the first time, fresh air passes through the nostrils and fills the rear air sacs. During the first exhale, this air moves from the rear air sacs into the lungs, where oxygen exchange takes place. On the second inhalation, the air moves into the front air sacs. Finally, during the second exhale, the air leaves the body. Because of this process, fresh air flows through the lungs during both inhaling and exhaling, ensuring a constant supply of oxygen.


Breathing is closely linked to flight in birds. Studies have shown that there are 3-5 wing beats per breath which indicates that flight muscles play a part in the breathing process. Flying requires a great deal of energy, and the efficient respiratory system ensures that oxygen is delivered to the muscles without interruption. It allows them to extract more oxygen from each breath, which is especially helpful when flying or living at high altitudes. The air sacs also help regulate body temperature by releasing excess heat, preventing birds from overheating during strenuous activity.


Perhaps it's not surprising that humming birds have the highest rate, reaching 500 times per minute when hovering. The slowest rates are seen with larger birds, for example an ostrich breathes at 5 times per minute.
